Carter's is best know for a vast line of inks, paste, ink eradicators, and
other office products. In 1927 they entered the Fountain Pen market with a line of
excellent, well built fountain pens and pencils. These are quality pens and compare
favorably with the other pens of the period. Unfortunately for the company the Great
Depression radically changed the pen market in the 1930's. In a wise move Carter decided
to drop pens and pencils from their product line late in 1931 or early 1932.
The jade green and the black and pearl
plastics from this period are not very stable. They tend to fade and change colors over
time. It is best to remove the ink sacs from these pens if you have any. Another problem
area is the pocket clip. They are held on by a small steel tab that is prone to rusting
and the pens are frequently found without the clips. They are a little tricky to change
out and it is hard to find suitable replacements. The clips also tend to have considerable
brassing. |
